Getting Started
What Kodey is, and how to begin in a few seconds.
Kodey is a fast, lightweight browser code editor for writing, editing, organizing and sharing code without installing a full development environment.
No. Kodey is intentionally simpler than a full IDE. It focuses on the tools you reach for most — editing, syntax highlighting, search, organization, sync and sharing — without the extra complexity.
No. Kodey runs in your browser.
No. You can start coding immediately as a guest. Creating an account lets you use cloud sync and access your Code Library from other browsers.
Yes. Kodey Free includes the core editor, Code Library, folders, common language support and the standard sharing tools. Kodey Pro adds the Extended Language Pack, 30-day Version History and longer-lived File Drop links. Compare Free & Pro →
Editor & Code Library
Languages, tabs, search and how your files are organized.
Kodey Free supports Plain Text, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, JSON, PHP, Markdown and XML. Kodey Pro adds the Extended Language Pack with TypeScript, JSX, TSX, Python, SQL, YAML, Shell/Bash, C, C++, C#, Java, Go, Rust and Ruby. See all supported languages →
Yes. Kodey keeps several documents open at once in tabs, and your open tabs are restored the next time you come back.
Yes. The Find & Replace panel searches the current document, shows how many matches were found, steps through them one at a time, and can replace a single match or all of them.
Yes. Your saved documents live in the Code Library, which supports a single level of folders. Anything not placed in a folder stays in Unfiled, and you can move files between folders at any time. Kodey does not use nested folders.
Deleting a folder moves its files to Unfiled rather than deleting them. Your documents stay in the Code Library.
No. Closing a tab only removes it from your tab bar. A document you have saved stays in the Code Library and can be reopened from there.
An empty Untitled tab is treated as a scratch tab. If you never type anything in it, it is not kept as a document in your Code Library — start typing and save it to make it permanent.
Sync & Accounts
How your Code Library follows you between browsers.
When you are signed in, Kodey keeps your Code Library synced to your account in the background as you save. Your documents and folders are stored with your account so the same library is there on your next visit. Kodey does not offer real-time collaborative editing.
Yes. Kodey is local-first. As a guest, your documents are stored in your browser on that device, so you can work without an account — they just won't follow you to another browser.
Synced means your most recent saved changes have made it to your account. While a save is in flight you'll see a syncing state, and if something goes wrong Kodey tells you so you can retry.
Yes. Sign in to the same account in another browser or on another device and your Code Library loads from the cloud.
When you create an account with existing guest work in the browser, Kodey asks whether you'd like to bring that local Code Library into your account. Accept and your guest documents are uploaded and synced; decline and they stay local to that browser.
Yes. You can continue with Google, or sign up with an email address and password.
Yes. Open Account settings while signed in and update your password in the security section. There's also a password reset link on the sign-in screen if you're locked out.
Kodey Pro & Billing
Pricing, upgrades, cancellation and what happens after.
Kodey Pro adds:
- Extended Language Pack — 14 additional languages
- 30-Day Version History with one-click restore
- File Drop links that last 30 days or never expire
- Everything in Free, always included
Kodey Pro is $5/month or $49/year — annual billing saves you $11 a year.
Yes. You can cancel at any time from the billing portal in Account settings. There's no long-term contract.
Your Pro access continues through the end of the billing period you already paid for. After that the account returns to Free and Pro-only capabilities stop being available. Your account, your documents and your Code Library are untouched — cancelling never deletes your code.
Existing snapshots aren't thrown away when your plan changes, but browsing and restoring version history is a Pro capability — the panel is locked again on a Free account. Re-subscribing restores access.
Existing links keep the expiration they were created with, including 30-day and never-expiring drops. New drops created after the downgrade use the Free options (24 hours or 7 days).
Yes. Open the billing portal from Account settings — plan changes, payment method updates and invoices are all handled there by Stripe.
Sign in and open Account → Plan. From there, Manage subscription opens the secure Stripe customer portal with your invoices, payment method and cancellation options.
Privacy & Your Code
Where your code lives and who it belongs to.
Your code remains your code. Kodey does not claim ownership of the code you create or store in the editor.
No. Kodey is an editor — it highlights, folds and searches your code, but it doesn't run it. Uploaded File Drop files are shared as text and are never executed.
Yes. If you're not signed in, your documents are saved in your browser's local storage on that device. Clearing your browser data for the site clears them, so sign in if you want your work backed up to the cloud.
Your code stays yours. Downgrading changes which Pro capabilities are available — it never deletes your documents or your Code Library.
Troubleshooting
Quick fixes for the issues we hear about most.
- Check your internet connection.
- Look at the sync status in the editor — it will show an error if a save failed.
- Reload the page and confirm you're still signed in to the right account.
- Save the document again to trigger a fresh sync.

Pro features such as the Extended Language Pack, Version History and long-lived File Drops require an active Kodey Pro plan on the account you're signed in with. If you just upgraded, reload the page so the new entitlement is picked up. See Kodey Pro →
- Use Code Library search — it matches file names and content.
- Check your folders, and the Unfiled group for files never placed in one.
- Saved File Drops live in the Drops folder.
- If you saved it while signed in, make sure you're signed in to the same account.
- The file must be code or plain text — binary files are rejected.
- It must be under 5 MB.
- Check your network connection and try the upload again.
